CHAPTER 29

Penny

“How do you feel about getting married for real?” I say to Pete, half joking, half serious.

“You are absolutely insane. We are not getting married and popping out babies just so that we don’t have to fess up to our lies.” Pete pulled me tight into his body, and I felt the tension leave my body as he did.

“Pete, your dad.” I couldn’t imagine telling his parents the truth, especially when that was the only reason his father was fighting cancer.

He sighs, running his fingers through his hair, tugging at the ends. “The things that you get me into, woman.”

“I feel bad that I have to leave for a week with everything happening.” His head lifted, and his questioning eyes met mine. “Yeah, a publishing conference. I go every year and don’t dare miss it.”

“Why am I just hearing about this now?” Pete isn’t happy to hear that I’m going on a trip when things are so new between us.

“Because I’m horrible at being a girlfriend. You’re smart for avoiding a real marriage with me.” I smile and kiss him on his cheek.

“Wait, did you just say you’re my girlfriend?” His eyes lit up in response to my slip.

“I don’t know what the hell we are anymore, Pete.” I look away from him and nervously chew on my lip. “One minute, we're best friends who haven’t seen each other in years. The next minute we’re kissing and touching each other,” I pause, trying to find my words, “in places I don’t touch my other friends.”

Of course, Pete finds this comical and just sits there watching as I stumble over my words, sounding like a blubbering idiot. I watch him stand and stalk toward me.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I smile at him as I watch his eyes turn dark and sexy.

“I’m coming to seal the deal and ensure you know who you belong to.” His wanton eyes and the huskiness of his voice when he says these things to me make my body heat with need. Despite my desire, I still do what I do and push back.

“So I belong to you, do I?” I put my hand on my hip.

“Ring on your finger says so.” This guy has an answer for everything.

“You may be my real boyfriend now, but you are still my fake fiancé,” I say as I poke him in the chest, but he grabs my finger, stops me mid-poke with one hand, and tilts my chin up to his mouth with the other. Our lips are nearly touching now. Kiss me already. Nope. He doesn’t kiss me. He leads me on like he always does. “Every man is a boyfriend before he is a fiancé,” he says.

“Being a fiancé is something that you have to work for—“

“Unless you’re Penelope Ward, then you just hijack a friend and bend his will to your way.”

I roll my eyes at him. Pete as my boyfriend, may just be the worst idea I’ve ever had. We fight like cats and dogs.
